Dementia friendly communities

In 2013/14, with 2 other charities, Community First Oxfordshire managed the Dementia Friendly Communities project. Dementia awareness sessions were delivered to 58 community and workplace groups. Nearly 900 people participated and a total of 446 Dementia Champions were recruited. An independent evaluation concluded the project achieved considerable success. Feedback from those taking part was overwhelmingly positive.

In 2015, we were commissioned by HealthWatch to suggest how dementia-friendly communities could be sustained. We recommended that GPs need to refer dementia patients to local community support groups; health and social care commissioners should recognise that community support can help people with dementia live well at home; and formal referral systems are needed to connect up GPs and community support groups with the professional dementia services provided by the County Council and NHS.
